Nausea & Low Residue Diet

Wed, April 25, 2012 12:04 PM

I have been having a Crohn's flare for about 5 weeks now, coupled with a lovely Upper Respiratory Infection. Luckily the diarrhea and frequency are calming down, as is the cough from the URI.

I am on a ton of new meds (prednisone is finally done, Cipro for another week, Metronidazole for another week, inhalers)  for the flare and the URI, and am quite nauseous. I am also on a 'low residue diet.'

Does anyone have any ideas for what to eat while nauseous and on the 'low residue diet?' The nausea is driving me nuts, and the med I am taking for THAT isn't working :)

NSAIDS are very rough on my stomach.  Jello is very helpful for my nausea - I use peach flavor - it seems the most "bland" flavor.  If you can tolerate crackers or bananas, they're also good for the nausea.  Sometimes I just have to get off the NSAIDS for a while and rest the gut with clear liquids, then graduate to tapioca, rice, potatoes.

I find that sweet potatoes don't make me THAT nauseous. I have been having trouble with everything lately as well, so one day they will and they next day they won't. Rice is another good one. Applesauce (just make sure there are no chunks, some brands there is). Smoothies, you can use pineapples and bananas, but nothing really tough or with seeds. If you really wanted to, you could peel strawberries, I find this to be too time consuming. I also found something that is easy for a fast meal or snack that is actually in the freezer section and pre cooked. They are little potato smiley faces. They are really tender and have no grease that would aggravate symptoms. I was sort of nervous to eat them but it ended up not being bad, I was able to digest and had pretty much no pain after eating. Another thing is stellini pasta (the little stars). They are super small and they just sort of float through the GI tract, and you can just eat them plain or with butter or broth, whichever way makes you less nauseous. For breakfast, I usaully just make smoothies becasue a low residue diet pretty much eliminates all cereals and oatmeals, so I find smoothies to be a good alternative. Plus you can make them really heatlhy and even add in a protein supplement if you want/need. Hope this helped, if you have any other questions feel free to ask!smiley
