Paleo diet

Mon, June 04, 2012 3:53 PM

Hi,
Has anyone tried the Paleo diet? I am wondering if it will be helpful for treating UC. I just purchased my book by Rob Wolf. I am wondering if anyone has used this diet and if so, did it work for you? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I have tried everything and all has failed.

I have not tried Paleo but it appears to be very similar to SCD which did not work for me at all.  I swear to you that my colitis goes into and out of remission all on its own and while some food while flaring can aggravate it, eating certain foods does not seem to help me at all.  I stuck to the SCD diet very religiously for about a year and it was so difficult but really has not provided me any more relief than anything else when I am flaring.  Its beyond frustrating to read that diets help so many people and yet the seem to have no effect on me whatsoever.  (don't get me wrong I am so glad that they do work for others)  It just seems like it would help.  But I have tried and tried and tried.

Paleo is very similar to SCD or GAPs.  SCD and GAPS is more specialized for people with IBD.

All can help with UC.  You will find things in all these diets that you might not be able to tolerate.  You will need to find out and tweak your diet to best fit you.

Good luck!

Check our Paleo Mom's blog or on facebook. She explains the Paleo diet well and includes information on the autoimmune protocol (no nuts, eggs, etc). She even has recipe ideas that she shares.

It's enormously helpful (Robb has uc).

The latest epigenetic research is showing how much the environment  influences our  gene expression.  Diet and also timing of meals and respect for natural light cycle and seasons makes a big difference to health and keeps inflammation in control. Try eating your last meal four hours before sleeping and limit blue light in your eyes when the sun goes down, especially from screens. There is a programme called flux which can be downloaded free to reduce light  gradually from computer screens as the sun goes down.Try using it  for a few days and then turn off to see how much the light was affecting sleep - and good sleep = better health.

I did some research on the Paleo diet, and in my opinion, it's not something that would benefit a person with UC.  It consists of a lot nuts and berries, which have seeds, and raw veggies.  Of course, each person's symptoms are different, and maybe if you don't suffer a lot of flares it might be worth trying.  I suggest doing your own research as to the specific types of foods the diet recommends and then before delving into it totally, try those foods one at a time and see how your body responds.

I would highly suggest reading the book "Wheat Belly" by William Davis. It is not specifically about a Paleo diet, but does touch on it, but it has very some good info on allergies with wheat that is causing inflammatory diseases that I think are well founded.

smileyHi,
The SCD, Paleo and GAPS diets are very similar. They are very helpful for Crohns or UC. I am on SCD and basically you eat meats (grass fed), veggies, fruit in moderation, homemade yogurt to help with the good bacteria for your intestines. SCD and Gaps have introductory steps to take to wean yourself into the diets. The diet wants you to eat what our ancestors ate years ago. Healthy food, nothing prepackaged or in a can. No sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and all the junk. Paleo has a little more variety, some chocolate, syrups etc you can research. SCD is very strict, if you read Breaking the Vicious Cycle you will understand the premise. Any one of these diets would definately help. I feel the difference if I cheat or eat something accidentally. SCD has legal and illegal foods. It really does work.
Go to www.Crohnsdad.com. A lot of info there even if you have UC and not Crohns. Also the Paleo recipes are really good.

Good Luck.
