I am (flare-free permitting) running my first Team Challenge. Since being diagnosed with Crohn's, my nutritional needs/capabilities have changed. Things I've eaten in the past for training are no longer an option (goodbye Cliff Bars). I'm looking for suggestions regarding nutrition for someone with IBD training for a 13 mile run.

I am also training for Team Challenge with an active UC flare. I have found that I do well with protein shakes (easy to digest!) and protein bars (typically Special K) as they give me the nutrition and the energy I need for those long runs without messing up my stomach. As I progress in miles, I typically use GUs on the course. Again, they are easily digestable!
Good luck!

Hmm...sounds like a really good question for your GI doctor and/or nutritionist. I'm studying animal nutrition and took some human nutrition courses (in the end we're all animals so there is a bunch of overlap). Nutrition becomes a lot more complicated with IBD, as it seems with everything else with this disease! Your body requires a lot more calories and nutrients, especially during a flare. With Crohn's it becomes even more complex with the issue that you may not be absorbing all of the nutrients you eat due to the inflamed tissue in your small intestine. When you don't absorb the nutrients, they literally go down the toilet. Add in exercise to the mix, and your body will need even more nutrients. It's not just a question of what to eat but how much and also what mix of nutrients (proteins, carbs, fats, etc.). Would definitely suggest talking to your health care team about this. Sorry for no specific suggestions but hope this helps.
