Best Diet for UC Patients?

Hello,

What's everyone's take on the best diet for a UC patient?  I'm trying to find a healthy balanced diet for people with UC.  I know there are already things that bother my stomach, but I want to be eating a nutritious diet without greasy and fatty foods.  Dairy, nuts, corn, apples, oranges bother my stomach the most.  Lettuce and raw vegetables also bother my stomach (however I still eat a lot of fruits and veggies).

Any insight would be wonderful.

After being diagnosed with colitis in 2010 I wanted to regain my health and strength through diet. I tried eating strictly gluten free but didn't see any regression of my symptoms. After that I discovered a diet called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, also known as SCD. I have been following this diet for almost a year now and have seen much success! Slowly but surely I have started to regain my energy and my life. I still have to follow the diet in order to feel my best but after being on it thus far, I can cheat every now and then and not become sick. I would highly recommend looking into this diet. I am now going to school and majoring in Dietetics and hopefully one day I can do more research on the diet to support it's claims for healing the gut. If you are really interested on this diet I would order a book off of amazon called Breaking Thr Vicious Cycle by a chemist named Elaine Gottschall. This book explains everything you need to know about this diet and the science behind it. Pecanbread.com is another good source online that explains more about this diet. Get organic frozen veggies & steam them. Freezing veggies breaks down their fiber so it's easy to digest smiley

My daughter was diagnosed with UC 6 years ago when she was 16.  She has been on many meds..trial and error...trying to find what will help.   About diet..this was very hard for her at 16 but around 18 she started watching her diet.  She also is currently on Lialda and probiotics (Ultimate Flora Critical Care 50 Billion) 2 per day.  She really watches her diet.  When she is in remission, she can eat more things than during a flare up.  Here's what helps her...no dairy (eggs may be ok), take off skins off fruits, no corn, no nuts, no meat (but ground meat might be ok), no fast foods, no fried or greasy foods, more "organic" foods with none of those additives like Fructose, etc.   Basically, if you can eat the food with a spoon, it may be easier to digest.   Keep a detailed food diary..not just what you ate but how it was made.  Also write about your poops...times, etc.  You may be able to pinpoint the certain trigger foods.   Everyone is different and what works for one may not work for all.  Good luck!!
Probiotics are expensive but they have really helped her stay in remission longer.

All I can suggest is staying away from any dairy. Everything you have mentioned I try to stay away from as well. I feel like I'm walking backwards, i was doing so good an the next thing you know FLARE. It is weird, I have asked my doctor if theres foods i should stay away from but she says i could eat anything i want. If only that was the truth. I would like to know what people respond to your post, I need help as well.

I have also found that peeling the skin off an apple before eating it to be beneficial (you still get great nutrients from the apple even without the skin).

Hello. 

You could try blanching your vegetables and fruits so your GI track does not have to work as hard. That way you can eat your vegetables and manage your UC too. Hope this helps :)
