Healthy diet does not work

Sat, February 02, 2013 7:04 PM

I am so frustrated. All the things that are "good" for you, fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, some sources of protein etc just do not work with Crohns. Prednisone causes weight issues, the food that you can tolerate is high in calories and low in nutrition. Eat healthy and pay for it in some fashion or eat to be "comfortable" and gain weight. Just sucks!!

I have heard of hundreds who have done well on The Specific carbohydrate Diet. However, it does not include grains, gluten, starch and sugar. It is not a low carb diet and just excludes certain carbs, but there si plenty if tasty food to take the place of what is elimintaed.

I have IBS and celiac symptoms and have followed the SCD for thirteen years. I am not cured but could not manage without this diet.
I have friends with UC who have done well with this diet. There is an online support group as well.

I suffered from UC for 3 1/2 and then started researching online. My husband was my donor and it has now been almost 4 months of being back to normal, having normal bowel movements - no gas, no cramps, no urgency, no blood, etc.  I am back to eating anything I want after 6 months on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.

If you would like to read my story and see links to other articles, email me.

Just don't give up thinking it is hopeless - there is another way. I am not on any drugs and completely symptom free.

These digestive issues are caused by a imbalance in the bacteria in your gut, most likely from antibiotic use or sometimes food poisoning.

Just google Fecal Transplant and you will find how it is being used to heal digestive issues - I had UC and it healed me.

I felt the same way too when my daughter was diagnosed.   As a Mom I thought our very nutritious / high grain/ organic lifestyle was the best, but after dx and several meetings with our  nutritionist, found we needed to scale back considerably.
I'm not sure how long you've been diagnosed, but I can tell you once my little one was in remission she was able to bring back fruits (in small doses) as well as a small side salad every now and again......sometimes raw veggies, but it did take time to get to that point.
I've found that I'm still able to to prepare many foods, I cook from scratch and it is still healthy with no additives and preservatives.  It certainly did take some "retraining" on my part and lots of trial and error - we even used a food journal to pinpoint some foods that were simply not working.  Eventually we also found some replacements for some of her favorites too.
One thing that has worked for Liz is smaller, more frequent meals, with safe snacks in between.
Good luck, be well
