New Diagnosis and Subsequent Surgery

Thu, March 20, 2014 7:26 PM

My diagnosis with ulcerative colitis was difficult in February of this year. I am 22 years old and active duty military. My symptoms started mostly with pain and without the proper tools and test my pain was mistaken for appendicitis and my appendix was removed in Afghanistan. As symptoms continued to progress and I returned to the medical team the placed me on a 10 day course of cipro and flagel with no effect. I was the medically evacuated to Germany where I was diagnosed with UC. I was then returned to the states and placed under hospital car. I had 2 flare ups where I almost died from internal bleeding and Thursday March 13 my flare forced me into surgery. Today I was placed into outpatient care. I am really just looking for some experiences with the surgeries and what I can expect for the surgery to create my j pouch and then my surgery to connect it?

Hi David  Have you had surgery yet?  Let me know if you still need someone to talk to.  I had my j-pouch surgery in 2013, and my reversal surgery this past March.

Caitlin,

i guess my my first question would be how does the K pouch effect your physical activity? I love to exercise especially lift weights and I have been curious as to how people who have had the reconnection surgery are effected in that aspect. I have talked to a few people who are big into running and for that reason they had chosen not to get the reconnection surgery.
