Should I take Yellow fever vaccine while on azathioprine/6mp? (work travel to Senegal)

Sun, October 06, 2013 3:22 AM

hello, I'm a 35 male and i was diagnosed with crohn's disease about 5 years ago, I'm currently at maintenance stage and on medication "azathioprine" (immune suppressant/6MP) for about 3 years now taking 150mg daily (sometimes skipping or reducing the dose), i have to travel to Senegal with work for 9 month, so i have to take the yellow fever vaccine which is a life but attenuated vaccine, one doctor (my main doctor said i should not take any life vaccines in general, while the other said I should take it (along with 2 Panadol pills before it & every 6 hrs for 3 days plus plenty of fluids) because it is way better than getting infected with the real virus there which is must tougher than the attenuated vaccine.
I need a third opinion please. anyone has taken it under similar conditions?

There are articles on IBD patients and vaccines.  In the article "Guidelines for Immunizations in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease" it is recommended that the immunizations schedule for patients with IBD should not, IN MOST CASES, deviate from the recommended schedule for the general population.  Current guidelines recommend inactivated (organisms have been killed or inactivated with heat or chemicals) vaccines in patients who are immunosuppressed.   Check with your doctor regarding vaccines.

Thanks Liz,
My doctor switched me to Pentasa, for 3 weeks and to take the vaccine in the second week (it has its risks which he made knowledgeable to me, but this is live), I guess I'll be the lab rat for this subject since there is no decisive medical records to built the case on it, I'll post the result here if i survived it  smiley

I am on methotrexate also an immune suppressant and have been told no to vaccines.   You should get the opinion of your gi and go with that.
