Toilets in the Galapagos????

Mon, January 05, 2009 1:00 AM

Hi,

my husband has gotten a great opportunity to lead a tour group in the Galapagos and I can go w/ half price. Problem is that there has been nothing to help minimize diarrhea caused by my surgery in April. Out of the cruise, there are about four or five days visiting the islands, most of which, he claims, have no toilets on them. I don't know whether I can go on an hour long nature walk, etc. if there are absolutely no toilets. Yet, I know older people go on these tours. Otherwise, I'm very fit. Anyone know about this. I am feeling depressed at the thought of having to cancel.

When it comes to bathroom decor, every detail matters, from the choice of tiles to the arrangement of accessories. Whether aiming for a minimalist oasis or a cozy retreat, the ambiance can be transformed with thoughtful touches. Consider incorporating plants for a fresh vibe or opt for sleek fixtures to enhance a modern aesthetic. For those seeking warmth, textured towels and soft lighting can create a welcoming atmosphere. I was in the Galapagos April of 2008 with full blown flare for UC and Crohns.  Due to the heat I had to stop taking all meds except for the prednisone.  I was burning all my electrolights so drink PLENTY of gatorade or sports drinks.

There are no bathrooms on most of the Islands, the three inhabited islands do have restaurants and shops that have bathrooms.  The other islands the cruise operators stated they will come and get you.  NO you cannot go in the bushes.  We used Celebrity Expeditions.

I hope this helps.

I recently returned from the Galapagos for my honeymoon, I have UC and was concerned about the long nature hikes, (up to three hous) with no bathroom. I was lucky that I was on an upswing and my Dr. gave me some short term steroids to help me through this trip. Perhaps talking to your Dr. about your issues and see if there is anything you can do. I was pretty nervous but got into a rythem. I woke up an hour before most people so i could "clear" my system and that seemed to work. I was on a luxery class ship so the bathrooms were pretty decent. Most islands do not have bathrooms or man made structures, make sure to alert your naturalist to your situation and see if there is anytihng you can do. Don't cancel your trip, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, if you have an accidient oh well, you are still in the galapagos which is a great place.

See this link for my trip report, it details the islands, and the bathroom situation, http://www.straycompass.com/article_page.php?recordID=27

No, our ship was definetly not luxury.  The bathrooms on the luxury ships should be nice, I would imagine.  Maybe you'd want to find out ahead of time?  Or just think, worst comes to worst, you will have a small bathroom that you would have to stand up while you poop, which is still possible.

Thanks for the long, encouraging but honest reply. I wonder what kind of boat you were on. This is a luxury cruise ship, small but kitted out well, I would think. Are you saying that even on these ships the bathrooms are that awful?

Thanks again.

Hello,

The nature walks that he is referring to are probably where you would take a boat to various secluded islands to see animals in their primitive state (unfamiliar with humans).  They will come close to you without fear, it is pretty amazing.  On these islands there are no toilets, or man-made structures what-so-ever.  You could tell your boat driver of the condition that you have and easily walk or run over to the boat to use the toilet on the boat if you had to go.  Unfortunately, the bathroom on the boat I had was one of the worst bathrooms I have ever encountered.  There is barely enough room to move, let alone sit down comfortably so you would have to poop standing up bending over...which is not too terrible if you have decent quadraceps (leg muscles).  On the main island of the Galapagos it is surprisingly modern, with tons of overly friendly people who would seem to be willing to let you use the restroom.  The walk through the Darwin exhibit would have bathrooms.  It would be a risky endeavor for you, but the Galapagos Islands are surely something you wouldn't want to miss if given the opportunity.  I would wear a diaper over missing the trip :P
