Experience with Rowasa Enema?

Fri, April 08, 2016 1:28 PM

I'm looking for input from anyone who has had experience using the Rowasa enema.  I was diagnosed with mild UC very recently (within the last month) and was prescribed Lialda and Rowasa enema (just for a month).  I've been using the Rowasa for nearly a week and I'm actually concerned because I seem to be able to handle it almost too well (I know, that sounds silly).  All of the accounts I read have said that it can be difficult to retain but that you get used to it, and to try to retain all night.  I also have read that most people have "messy gas" in the morning, which I assume to be the remaining medication being expelled, and BMs with chalky coating, which is also the meds.  I know for sure I'm using the whole bottle, but I haven't had any issue retaining all night, and I don't expel anything at all in the morning...a little gas, but no evidence of the medication.  I just seem to absorb absolutely all of it...which seems contrary to everything I've read. I also seem to be a bit stopped up and haven't had a proper BM since starting the treatment, although I feel fine. Has anyone had a similar experience?  Should I contact my doctor?  I've only just started, so I don't want to continue if I'm doing something wrong, but I also don't want to bug my doctor if this is normal.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

I have used the enemas on and off for flares for several years and they usually bring relief of bleeding in a night or two. I have never had any issues retaining the medicine overnight and rarely expel gas or medicine in the morning. When my doctor asked how I was managing the enemas he stated that my ability to hold the enema overnight was "impressive"! I remember that word clearly because it seemed strange!  Anyway, your handling of the enemas seems very similar to mine and my GI is pleased so I don't think you have anything to worry about. But as always, communicate with your doctor. Good luck.
