Does Remicade (Infliximab) make colds last longer?

Sat, December 17, 2016 7:02 AM

Hello fellow 'mab users. I have had only two infusions so far. I had to cancel my 3rd because I had a bad cold. But 3 weeks later, the cold is still really dragging me down, with lots of coughing, congestion and phlegm, and extreme tiredness. My fever only went about 1 degree over normal for a day or two. Is becoming nearly bedridden from a month-long cold what I can expect on Remicade? What contagious illnesses have you gotten while on Remicade and how long did they last?

What is worse, I got a UC flare up in the middle of all this and now I am suffering all the familiar UC symptoms, too.
Although I had no reaction to the infusions, I am considering giving up on Remicade now.

having had infusions of remicade for nearly 13 years, i can say that i have myself, noticed that every couple of years i get the upper respiratory infection from *** ! it takes over fast and i find i have to tackle it fast! having said that,i must have immune super powers, despite the suppressants because i feel like i'm coming down w a cold from time to time and feel fine the next day! our bodies and diseases remain a mystery to me! i would lead the parade cheering on remicade...it's been a lifesaver for me!

From what I have been told by my drs, both Remicade and Humira are biologics meaning they suppress your immune system, so my guess would be yes, when you would experience any "normal" type illnesses such as a cold or a cough, they can last longer because your immune system is suppressed. It takes longer to heal. My dr. told me that if you establish very good hand washing habits, most patients can stay pretty healthy.  I haven't started Remicade or Humira myself yet, but it looks like I am heading in that direction in about a month or so.
