Newly diagnosed & in need of good doctor

Sat, August 24, 2024 10:55 AM

Hello, I was diagnosed with crohns w/colitis in May of this year and it has been a horrible experience so far! I should of known after waiting 3 mths to see the doctor recommended and only seeing his nurse when I finally got in, 5hat this wasn't going to go well! The nurse told me I had hemorrhoid issues w/out even an exam at the time of 1st visit & scheduled me for a colonoscopy. The day of my procedure I met my "doctor" just before my procedure which in of itself I have found seems to be the norm, I wasn't too upset, until I was woke up before my colonoscopy was complete! That should of been my second clue, then afterward he diagnosed me with crohns that was that, no info to help me understand, and then I started having issues again w/the supposed hemorrhoids, long story short, I ended up in the hospital with a burst anal fistula! I was told if I wouldn't of come to hospital I was on the verge of sepsis and could of died! Then went for follow up w/doc who didn't listen to me and reported all the opposite symptoms then I said, i.e. no pain or problems, even after I told him I still have a problem w/another fistula, he didn't even look at it & said I had no problems!!!!! When I told him the pharmacy said to ask him abt the medication he put me on, Lialda, because I have a problem taking products with motrin in them he said "no problem it's time released so won't affect your stomach", I was skeptical as well, it's not a capsule so no outer coating to protect it from stomach acids that would in turn upset my stomach worse, the doctor just says keep taking it! I live downriver but am willing to travel anywhere for a good doctor, if anyone can recommend one or has any ideas or help for me it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for "listening"!

Sorry to hear you are going through this. While our Crohn's & Colitis community website is not a space for recommendations to doctors or other medical/ legal professionals, here are some tips to consider:

1. View our website for a listing of our professional members. Please note, this is not a full list of doctors Find a Medical Expert | Locate a Crohn’s Doctor | Crohn's & Colitis Foundation (crohnscolitisfoundation.org)

2
. Take a look at this factsheet which covers some tips and things to keep in mind when looking for a doctor. ibd-help-center-fact-sheet-final-12.23_0.pdf (crohnscolitisfoundation.org)

3. Contact your health insurance company to see if they have a listing of doctors that are in-network with your insurance in your area. You may want to go through that list specific to your area and if possible, call or search them to learn about their areas of focus, experience, etc.

If you need assistance accessing or learning more tips, please feel free to contact our IBD Help Center: info@crohnscolitisfoundation.org

Thank you!
